The Heart of our Home

Where is the heartbeat of your home? The heartbeat is the soul of the home. Ours is located in the kitchen. Just like a human heart, our kitchen is important to the functionality and vitality to our home. I wanted every room in the house to fit our whole family at the same time. Beings that we are a family of five, I needed to make sure I could fit us comfortably, while enjoying our time together. This kitchen is full of storage and can seat at least 6 at the island. It is also, where this home had the biggest transformation. If you’re new here, this is the before post of our current home. It was in bad shape and needed some love.

Hey, Hey, Good Lookin’, whatcha got cookin’
How’s about cookin’ somethin’ up with me …

The kitchen was surrounded by these lovely boxes that camouflaged the florescent lights and AC duct work. The quaint island was topped with an exceptional ceiling fan. Just enough wind to make sure your just cooked dinner got real cold fast! Since your so excited to sit down and eat, just pull up a chair and try to find a non-sticky spot to sit. Good Luck!

Moving on…
Fast forward 7 months and it doesn’t even look like the same room. Although, it still gets sticky with three little boys running around. I have compiled many websites and images that helped me achieve the look I wanted. Collecting most of them on my Pinterest boards. The main board is broken down into subcategories. Most of the ideas are saved to the kitchen and pantry board. We added a pantry during construction, by moving the AC intake to another wall in the foyer.

I’m not sure I have a certain style, but if I were to explain it, my style would be simple and functional. Trying to stay true to the style of the home, I made sure to add details to compliment the farmhouse design. I’m not a decorator, so you won’t see styled shelves or counters. I needed to make sure they functioned with our family. The less stuff I have out, the less I have to dust and clean. I tried to add timeless style in the little details as we renovated. We rerouted the AC ducts and tore down the wall between the dining and kitchen. Having an open floor plan was important to us. If you read my laundry post, you know I love the color blue. Blue by far my favorite color, so you will see that color throughout our whole house. I guess it works because I live with all boys.

Over the course of the renovation, I searched the internet and local stores looking for ways to save money without losing style, function, and quality. Below you will find the details and items we used in our kitchen. If I wasn’t able to find it, I will try to link a similar item. If I left anything out feel free to ask in the comments. You can find us on Instagram and Pinterest, or I’m just an email away. Scroll to find all the details!

Details:
Wall color: Benjamin Moore – grey Owl
Cabinet / Trim Color: Benjamin Moore – White Dove
Island Color: Benjamin Moore – Philipsburg Blue
Flooring: Protech Collection- WPC Flooring / Broadmoor – Cripple Creek
Appliances Pros/cons: Frigidaire Professional Bought locally from C&C appliances. They price match and were easy to work with.
Storage: We used wall space to make a use for storage. Storage is abundant. The upper cabinets are usable and contain some of our wedding dishes. The island has storage on both sides. If you move the barstools, those cabinets contain more entertaining pieces that are large and bulky.
Paper Towel: I found this idea off of… PINTEREST! Best decision ever. I don’t like things on the counters and this allows the boys to freely clean up their own messes.
Microwave: Located in the island. We have had the same microwave since before we were married (2011). We just told our builder the dimensions and he made it perfect.
Seating: I went one afternoon during the construction and laid out spare boards to map out what I wanted. Having a large family requires a need for more seating. I called to see how large I could get a jumbo slab of quartz, and that became my starting point. Our island seats at least 6 barstools, plus a highchair.
Counter tops Pros/Cons: White quartz is beautiful but it can stain. Ours stained the first weekend we moved in. A pink post-it got wet near the sink and it stained the counter. You won’t be able to find it (but I can). Make sure to wipe up grape juice right away too.
Cabinet Style: Shaker style built by Roody Poole in Lake Charles.
Upper Cabinet Handles: Amazon
Middle Cabinet (eye level) Handles: Amazon
Lower Cabinet Handles: Amazon
Pantry Handles: Amazon
Pendants: Wayfair
Barstools: Wayfair
LED Ceiling Lights
Sink: Bought through the cabinet maker. Similar one
Faucet / soap dispenser: Wayfair

Make it a home:
I enjoy adding the boys’ colored pictures, treasures, and notes. Our “decorations” include their work and creations. I kept in mind that they live here too. We want them to feel comfortable in the space as well.

Enjoy your chaos!
Bless your heart,
Chelse

Not only is your kitchen beautiful, but it’s also inviting, unpretentious, and “livable.” You guys did an amazing job on the heart of your home.

Serious kitchen envy going on over here! I LOVE how bright it is. That blue is stunning and I am already planning on repainting my island in that color

Oh wow!! That’s so neat that you have been here.

I will try and work on the living room post next. We added a window in the living room and changed the mantle.
